Union Home Minister Amit Shah is on a day-long visit to Punjab to met the families of those who paid with their lives in Mansa, Gurdaspur and Sangrur recently for raising their voices against the drug menace in the state.

He met family members of an anti-drug activist, Parvinder Singh Jhota, who was recently shot dead by a chemist for objecting him to selling synthetic drugs. The body of the activist has not been cremated by his family even after a week of his murder. His father, Bhim Singh, an ex-serviceman, had said he would not cremate his son till justice is delivered.

Mr Shah met with the family of Vikramjit Singh in Batala, Gurdaspur, who was allegedly killed by drug traffickers for objecting to them selling drugs.

He then went to Sangrur and met family members of Gulzar Singh, who allegedly committed suicide when his pleas were not heard by the state government against the sale of drugs, which made his son a drug addict. Families have expressed satisfaction after meeting with Mr Shah.

The Home Minister said that the situation of the family members has shaken him. He blamed the Aam Aadmi Government in Punjab for protecting the drug traffickers. He said that gangs are working in districts to protect drug traffickers. He told Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann that he would not be able to handle the other two cases also and would hand them over to the CBI as well.

Mr Shah participated in a Dussehra ceremony at Ludhiana, where the burning of Ravna’s effigy has symbolically been themed as ‘Ravan of Chitta’. During his address, he assured that by the end of 2029, the ‘Ravana of Drugs’ will also be burnt to free Punjab from drugs
