Leaders of Bangladesh’s Hindu community have urged Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to establish a minority commission to address concerns over alleged harassment and discrimination faced by minority groups.

A delegation of community representatives met Tarique on Thursday, highlighting incidents of deprivation, including reported job losses during the tenure of the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.

The delegation also called for the enactment of a minority protection law and proposed the creation of a Hindu foundation aimed at safeguarding the rights and welfare of the community.

“We raised our concerns, and he assured us that the issues would be addressed gradually,” said Jayanta Kumar Deb, president of the Mohanagar Sarbojaneen Puja Committee. Among other demands, the leaders sought at least three days of public holiday during Durga Puja.
