Army Out for Relief and rescue operations
AMN / Incessant rains in Tamil Nadu have badly affcted normal life. Chennai airport has been closed as it was totally flooded. Nearly 4,000 people living on the banks of Adayar river in Chennai have been evacuated to safer zones, officials say. The river is in spate following discharge of excess water from Chembarambakkam reservoir.
Army called in for rescue operations;
Two columns of army’s Garrison Infantry Battalion have been pressed into service in Tambaram and Oorapakkam after the Tamil Nadu government sought military assistance. The Navy is also on stand-by. All flight operations at Chennai airport were suspended tonight until further review and a number of flights disrupted as waters inundated the runway and the tarmac.
“Two sections of Railway tracks badly affected – Chennai Egmore Villupuram section and Chennai Central Gudur section. Because of these two sections getting affected, train operations are badly hit. More train cancellations likely on Wednesday. Appeal passengers to check their train status, we’re trying to inform people,” says Anil Kumar Saxena, Additional DG (PR), Railways.
PM Modi speaks to CM Jayalalithaaa
The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has spoken to Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Ms. Jayalalithaa, on flood situation in parts of the State.
“Spoke to Jayalalithaa ji on the flood situation in parts of Tamil Nadu. Assured all possible support and cooperation in this unfortunate hour”, the Prime Minister tweeted.
