The Madras High Court has stayed the extension of the Sterlite plant at Thuthukkudi in Tamil Nadu. Hearing the petition against the extension today, the court stayed the further extension of the Plant and had also ordered a public hearing on the issue.
Earlier yesterday, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisamy ordered an inquiry by a retired high court judge into Thuthukkudi police firing. The incident left 10 people dead and 95 injured. The Chief Minister also announced compensation of 10 lakh rupees to each of the families of the dead persons.
The state government clarified that the police had to take unavoidable action to bring the situation under control. Yesterday marked the 100th day of the local protests against the Stertlite Copper mining industry in Thuthukkudi, saying that it causes serious environmental hazards.
