The young leader of the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti, Hardik Patel has been detained along with some of his supporters in Surat today.He was trying to take out Ekta Yatra in Surat Gujarat.
Patel group threatens ‘jail bharo’ if Hardik not released
They have now been taken to the district police headquarters.
The Gujarat government had Friday evening denied the permission for the Yatra. However, the Patel leaders, spearheading agitation for reservation under the OBC quota, were adamant to go ahead with their march.
Hardik Patel alleged that the state government and police are trying to create unrest in the state.
Navsari district collector RM Muthudath has said that the district administration has also denied permission to a counter-rally sought by OBC leaders and the representatives of around 91 villages surrounding Navsari.
After arrest Gujarat Police immediately instructed concerned authorities across the state to take a decision on imposing ban on mobile internet services as per the situation in their respective jurisdictional areas. It is also noteworthy that Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel is in Surat district to attend a public function.
Till today morning, the PAAS leaders maintained utmost secrecy about their rally and other plans. The main demand of the PAAS leaders is to include the Patidar community under OBC status, to get the reservation benefits like government jobs and several other education benefits.
The agitation leaders demanded stringent action against the policemen, who indulged “committed excesses with the members of the Patel community” after the mega rally on August 25th. In this operation, 10 persons including a policeman were killed, forcing the state government to call in the army and paramilitary forces.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Anandiben Patel has called emergency meeting at his Gandhinagar residence to discuss the law and order situation in the state following detention of Patidar leader Hardik Patel.
According to sources, senior cabinet ministers of the state are attending the meeting.
Sporadic incidents of stone pelting and road blocks have been reported from the different parts of the state.
Many towns and villages in Saurashtra region have observed total bandh in protest of detention of Patidar leader Hardik Patel.
Bus Rapid Transit System, BRTS and Municipal Transport services have been suspended in many areas of Ahmedabad as recessionary measure.
