The special court of Ahmedbad has once again deferred the judgment on the quantum of punishment to the 24 convicts in the Gulberg Society massacre case till Monday. During today’s hearing, the defence lawyer Abhay Bharadwaj asked the court to give the convicts an opportunity to reform by awarding lesser punishment.
While the special public prosecutor RC Kodekar demanded the capital punishment or life imprisonment to all the 24 convicted victims. The special court on 2nd June convicted 24 persons in the Gulberg Society case while it acquitted 36 persons. 69 people including former Congress MP Ehsan Jafree were killed in the Gulberg Society massacre in 2002.
The special court of Ahmedabad will likely to pronounce the quantum of punishment on Monday. The special public prosecutor of SIT, RC Kodekar, told the special court that capital punishment for the 24 convicted has demanded severe punishment to all the 24 convicts saying that the act was against the very ethos of Indian culture of coexistence.
The defence lawyer Abhay Bharadwaj asked the court to consider the age, economic background and no past criminal record of the convicts before awarding punishment. 69 people including former Congress MP Ehsan Jafree were killed in the Gulberg Society massacre in 2002,
