Thousands of students, teachers and public sector workers marched across Greece yesterday, demanding increased education funding, better school facilities, smaller class sizes and improved working conditions. Greek police said around ten thousand demonstrators gathered peacefully in central Athens and its suburbs, while protests also took place in Thessaloniki, Patras, Larissa and other cities.

Protesters chanted, “From Greece to France, we want public, free education,” as they gathered outside Parliament.

The demonstrations included strikes by primary and secondary school teachers over low wages and staff shortages. Substitute teachers called for permanent jobs, while unions joined demands for improved public services and greater investment in education.

The rallies have added pressure on Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ centre-right government ahead of elections expected in mid-2027. Greece continues to face economic challenges following its 2009-2018 debt crisis, with stagnant wages, soaring rents and rising energy costs affecting households.

Education Minister Sofia Zacharaki said the government was addressing student concerns and had allocated more than 733 million Euros for student residences and facility upgrades. The government has also pledged around one billion Euros in subsidies and other benefits to help households and businesses cope with higher energy costs and inflation linked partly to the Iran war.
