According to the Union Rural Development Minister Mr Jairam Ramesh, drinking water security is facing multiple threats including drying up of groundwater sources and lowering down of groundwater level due to its unregulated over-extraction.

Most of the of drinking water supply schemes of rural India are depending on groundwater sources and due to the over extraction these sources are drying up.

Mr Ramesh who is also holding the additional charge of Drinking Water and Sanitation said that it was a serious issue for which the ministry is planning to regulate it. The objective of the central government’s National Drinking Water Programme is to provide every rural person with safe water for drinking and other domestic needs on sustainable basis.
