Govt seeks explanations from Hotels for overcharging on bananas, eggs

Bisheshwar Mishra / NEW DELHI

Government has taken the reports of overcharging for two bananas in a hotel in Chandigarh and boiled eggs in a hotel in Mumbai seriously.

Talking to media here today, Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said that he has directed the department to look into the matter and seek report on it. He wondered how can the cost of two bananas and eggs be so high even if they levy service charges.

Recently a hotel in Chandigarh had reportedly charged 442 rupees for two bananas from a Bollywood actor. There are also reports of a person being charged 1700 rupees for two boiled eggs in a hotel in Mumbai.

Mr Paswan directed the department to ask these hotels the basis of overpricing. The Minister said the rules being framed for the Consumer Protection Act passed in the recently concluded Parliament session will have strict provisions against such unethical practices to protect the interests of consumers. He also asked the department to look into the matter of overpricing beyond MRP and other mandatory provisions to protect the consumer rights.
