The government has taken all the measures to deal with cyclone Mocha, said State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Enamur Rahman. Speaking to the media in Dhaka in the afternoon on Wednesday, the Minister said that based on the prediction of the Meteorological department , it looks likely that the deep depression will turn into cyclonic storm Mocha between evening and midnight of Wednesday. The Cyclone ‘Mocha’ may strike between the evening of May 13 and early in the morning of May 14.
Enamur Rahman said that like previous years, the government has put the army, navy and coast guard on alert to deal with any situation arising due to the cyclone. He said preparations have been taken in case the cyclone changes direction. All the concerned people have been alerted.
The Minister said Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar face a greater risk of landslide due to rain and high speed wind. Preparations for their safety have been made. Emanur Rahman said that cyclone shelters have been readied and arrangements for food made for the people who may come to the cyclone shelter.
Meanwhile, to minimise the loss to the crops in the coastal areas, the Agriculture Ministry has asked farmers to harvest 80 percent of ripe paddy , mature mango and other crops.It has also asked for a massive campaign in the field to inform farmers about the cyclone warning.
The Indian Met Department (IMD) in its update in the afternoon on Wednesday has said that the cyclone will weaken slightly from around 5.30 pm on 13th May and cross south east Bangladesh and North Myanmar coasts between Cox’s Bazar and Kyaukpyu between 9 am to 12 noon on 14 May with maximum sustained wind speed of 110-120 kmph gusting to 130 kmph.
