The government today gave a one-year extension to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri till 14th July next year. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved a one-year extension in service for Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, who is a 1989 batch IFS officer, beyond 14th July this year.
Mr Misri assumed charge as Foreign Secretary on 15th July 2024. He was India’s Ambassador to China from January 2019 to December 2021. He has also served as Private Secretary to three Prime Ministers of India – I.K. Gujral, Dr. Manmohan Singh and Narendra Modi.
Misri, a 1989-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, assumed office as India’s Foreign Secretary in 2024. The extension will enable him to continue leading India’s diplomatic engagement at a time of evolving regional and global developments.
During his diplomatic career spanning over three decades, Misri has held several key assignments in the Ministry of External Affairs, the Prime Minister’s Office, and Indian missions in Europe, Africa, Asia and North America.
In New Delhi, he has served on the Pakistan desk of the Ministry of External Affairs and worked on the staff of former External Affairs Ministers I.K. Gujral and Pranab Mukherjee. He has also served as Joint Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office and as Private Secretary to three Prime Ministers—I.K. Gujral, Manmohan Singh and Narendra Modi.
His overseas assignments include postings in Brussels, Tunis, Islamabad and Washington D.C. He has also served as Deputy High Commissioner to Sri Lanka and Consul General of India in Munich.
