Minister of Communications and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad today said the government is committed to increase rural teledensity to 100 per cent by the year 2020. Replying to supplementaries in the Lok Sabha, Mr Prasad said government is striving hard to provide high quality telecommunication services to all citizens.
He said efforts are on to increase rural teledensity from the current level of around 39 to 70 per cent by the year 2017 and 100 per cent by 2020. Mr Prasad said by 2017, government will achieve 175 million broadband connections.
The minister informed the House that the vision of the National Telecom Policy 2012 is to provide secure, reliable, affordable and high quality converged telecommunication services.
He said Universal Service Obligation Fund is being utilised for the purpose of providing the communication services in remote and rural areas.
