HIROSHIMA

The Group of Seven foreign ministers pledged Monday to work toward a world without nuclear weapons, encouraging people around the world to visit the western Japan city as well as Nagasaki that were devastated by U.S. atomic bombings in 1945.

“We reaffirm our commitment to seeking a safer world for all and creating the conditions for a world without nuclear weapons in a way that promotes international stability,” the foreign ministers said in a statement called the “Hiroshima Declaration on Nuclear Disarmament and Non-Proliferation,” issued following their two-day talks.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry’s symbolic visit to the city’s Peace Memorial Park on the sidelines of the meeting, along with other G-7 counterparts from Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan also reinforced the ministers’ pledge to advance global disarmament talks. KYODO
