Veteran CPI(M) leader and former Speaker of the West Bengal Assembly Hasim Abdul Halin died in Kolkata today morning following cardiac arrest. He was 80. Halim was the Speaker of the State Assembly for a record time of 29 years from 1982 to 2011.
He became the Law Minister in Jyoti Basu Cabine in 1977. He was elected to the State Assembly for seven consecutive terms since 1977.
The West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee, Left Front Chairman Biman Basu and leaders of all political parties cutting across party lines have condoled his death.
