Veteran Congress leader and former Union minister Mohsina Kidwai passed away in the early hours of this morning. She was 94 and had been unwell for some time.
Born on January 1, 1932, in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, she hailed from a respected family. She received her higher education from Aligarh Muslim University and was widely admired for embodying the refined cultural traditions of Awadh. Known for her grace and integrity, Kidwai was regarded as a leader with strong moral and human values.
Kidwai began her political career alongside former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, under whom she later served as a Union minister. She was subsequently inducted into the Cabinet of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Over the course of her long political career, she represented the people as a member of the Lok Sabha from 1977 to 1989 and later served in the Rajya Sabha from 2004 to 2016.
She also served as Chairperson of the Central Hajj Committee and held several key organisational roles in the Indian National Congress, including General Secretary. Kidwai was also a member of the party’s Working Committee and Central Election Committee, and was counted among the party’s most trusted leaders.

A few years ago, her autobiography was published in English, Hindi, and Urdu. The book was compiled by noted journalist Rasheed Kidwai.
Her funeral took place at the Panj Peeran cemetery located on Lodhi Road in New Delhi which was attended by many congressmen including leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi
