An Influential Islamic seminary Jamia Nizamia on Friday rejected the chanting of the slogan ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ and ruled that the chant was not just against Islamic faith, but also irrational.
The Mufti concluded by writing that “the Muslims of Bharat love the country, but chanting Bharat mata ki jai is against Islam and also irrational.”
The fatwa comes after a prominent religious figure Syed Ghulam Samdani Ali Quadri from the Old City asked the fatwa over the issue to the seminary.
Explaining the rationale behind the ruling, Mufti Azeemuddin, who heads the Darul Ifta, or fatwa centre of the seminary , wrote that not just is the slogan against the Islamic faith, it is against reason.
He said that since only a human can give birth to a human, calling India as ‘Mother’ or Mata is irrational.
“The mother of a human is human. No piece of land and no animal and no other object gives birth to humans,” the fatwa reads.
The seminary clarified that those who wish to treat the “land of Bharat as their mother, then this is the person’s individual religious belief and that the person cannot force others (to believe in this).”
