The Election Commission (EC) has issued an advisory to all political parties asking them to ‘desist from displaying photographs of defence personnel or photographs of functions involving defence personnel in advertisements, or otherwise as part of their election propaganda or campaigning’.

The directive was issued after the Defence Ministry raised the matter with the election watchdog. The Defence Ministry said certain political parties are using the photos of defence personnel in their election campaign. In the advisory dated March 9, the EC reiterated the instructions given to the political parties in 2013, that armed forces are “apolitical and unbiased stakeholders in a modern democracy. It is, therefore, necessary that political leaders and parties exercise great caution while making any reference to the armed forces in their election campaigns”.

The Commission has also directed the political parties not to use the photos of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) or photos of any functions involving the defence forces for any kind of advertising propaganda or election campaigning.
