India’s External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar will attend the funeral of former Bangladesh Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences, tweeting: “Deeply saddened to learn about the passing away of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in Dhaka.”

Bangladesh’s first female prime minister and a central figure in the country’s turbulent political history, Khaleda Zia passed away early Tuesday (December 30) at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka after a prolonged illness, the BNP said. She was 80.

Bangladesh has announced three days of state mourning. Her funeral (Namaz-e-Janazah) will be held on Wednesday afternoon at the South Plaza of the National Parliament, followed by burial with full state honours beside her late husband, former President Ziaur Rahman (Bir Uttam), at Zia Udyan.
