NEW DELHI: (AMN) Delhi has geared up for the Commonwealth Games 2010. Over 1100 Atheletes and delegates have already arrived here. Despite all the negative publicity about the preparation of the games all the 71 participating countries have confirmed their participation. Over 200 Indian athletes and delegates including hockey, weightlifting, boxing and shooting teams have also reached the Khel Gaon. The cleanliness drive is in its last leg as many athletes and teams had reservations over hygiene.
Prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh on Sunday launched a world class facility for treatment of sports injuries at Safadarjung hospital here. This is the first dedicated sports injury centre in the country equipped with state of art operation theatres with facility of video conferencing and modern diagnostic facilities. Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said, the centre aims to provide world class treatment for sports related injuries besides catering to the needs of players participating in Commonwealth Games.
Meanwhile the Australian team’s medical director Peter Harcourt has said, risk posed to Australian athletes by dengue fever in New Delhi has been blown out of proportion. Harcourt said he understood the concerns but was convinced after several days at the Games village that the risk to athletes was incredibly low.
Chief Minister Sheila Dixit is also visiting the Games village regularly to take stock of the situation. Village can presently accommodate over 7,000 athletes and delegates. Arrangements have also been made for athletes and delegates in some five star hotels. A four tier security apparatus is in place to ensure incident free Games.
