Genoa

As frantic search is underway today for survivors of a bridge collapse in Genoa the death toll has gone up to 39.

The government blamed the company in charge of the country’s motorways for the disaster.

Rescuers say there is little hope for more survivors underneath the Morandi bridge, where almost 40 vehicles fell 148ft in yesterday’s collapse.

The cause is not yet known but there have been calls for the heads of the company operating the bridge to resign. The city’s authorities have declared two days of mourning.
