The Meteorological Department of Bangladesh has asked the maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra to hoist the distant warning signal 2 in view of the deep depression over East Central Bay and adjoining areas to North-Northwestwards intensifying into a cyclonic storm named Yaas.
According to the special bulletin of the Met Department at 6 a.m. on Monday, the cyclone was centred about 675 kms south-southwest of Chattogram port, 605 kms south-southwest of Cox’s Bazar port, 650 kms south of Mongla port and 605 kms south of Payra port. The bulletin said that it is likely to intensify further and move in a north-northwesterly direction.
It advised all fishing boats and trawlers over north bay and deep sea to remain close to the coast and not venture deep into the sea.
The Government of Bangladesh is preparing to face the cyclone when it is likely to hit the coast by May 26. Inaugurating and laying the foundation stone of 225 cyclone and flood shelter centres, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said on Sunday that the government has already started to take precautionary measures to minimise the damage of the cyclone.
In Chattogram over 511 cyclone shelters have already been set up. The local administration has prepared a sufficient number of cyclone shelters and formed medical teams to deal with the situation arising out of the cyclone.
State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Md Enamur Rahman told the media on Sunday that three times more than required cyclone shelters are being prepared to deal with Yaas cyclone keeping in view the Corona situation in the country.
