The Communist Party of India has strongly condemned the indictment initiated by United States authorities against Cuban revolutionary leader Raúl Castro, describing it as “outrageous” and “politically motivated.”

In a statement issued by its National Secretariat on May 21, the CPI said the move reflected the continuing hostile policy of successive US administrations towards Cuba. According to the party, the action was aimed at undermining Cuba’s sovereignty, destabilising its socialist political system and intimidating those who have defended the Cuban Revolution over the decades.

The CPI stated that Raúl Castro, along with Cuba’s historic revolutionary leadership, had played a key role in safeguarding the country’s dignity, independence and social achievements despite prolonged economic blockade, sanctions and external pressure.

Expressing solidarity with the Cuban people and government, the CPI called upon democratic, progressive and peace-loving forces around the world to oppose what it termed as political vendetta and interference in the internal affairs of sovereign nations.

The party further said that at a time when Cuba is facing severe economic difficulties, largely due to the long-standing US embargo, such measures would only heighten tensions and violate the principles of peaceful coexistence and international law.

Reiterating its support for Cuba’s right to determine its own political and economic path without external interference, the CPI affirmed its solidarity with Raúl Castro and the Cuban people in their struggle for national sovereignty and against imperialism.

US intensify pressure on Cuba; Trump, Rubio describe nation as failed state

US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio intensified pressure on Cuba, describing the island nation as a failed state and a continuing national security threat to the United States. Speaking separately in Florida and at the White House, both officials signalled a tougher posture towards Havana while also leaving open the possibility of a negotiated settlement.

Trump, responding to questions about Cuba during an Oval Office event on deregulation, said the United States wanted to help the Cuban people and Cuban Americans reconnect with the island. Trump said Cuban Americans in Florida wanted to invest in and rebuild Cuba. Hours earlier, Rubio had delivered a far sharper assessment during remarks to reporters at Miami Homestead Airport before departing for India. Mr. Rubio said Cuba hosted Russian and Chinese intelligence presence and had acquired weapons systems from both countries over the years. He also accused Havana of supporting destabilising groups in Latin America.

Rubio said Washington was prepared to provide humanitarian assistance to Cuba, but only through independent groups and not through Cuban military-linked entities. He accused Cuba’s military-linked company GAESA of diverting resources meant for ordinary citizens. Rubio also dismissed suggestions that the administration was pursuing nation-building. The Trump administration has steadily tightened its Cuba policy in recent months through sanctions, criminal indictments and diplomatic pressure. Cuba has also faced worsening economic conditions, rolling blackouts and shortages of food and fuel over the past several years.
