Secretary West in the Ministry of External Affairs Sujata Mehta and India’s Permanent Representative of India to the UN Syed Akbaruddin briefed the media about the bilateral meeting and Vice President’s address to the Plenary session of NAM.

Akbaruddin said as an outcome of the summit a Margarita declaration will be adopted by the leaders. He said India tried to get the theme of terrorism included in the declaration but consensus could not be achieved. He, however, said that India was able to get references to terrorism in the declaration in the language purely and largely suggested by it. Mr Akbaruddin said both the host, Venezuela as well as large number of countries were supportive of India’s reference to terrorism. Clearly, indicating towards Pakistan he said the issue of terrorism could not be adopted with consensus in the declaration because of one of India’s neighbours.
