name-plates and directional signs in Urdu and other languages which have been given official status in states and union territories other than Hindi.

The decision was taken by the ministry recently while considering the public convenience and welfare of the large sections of society living in the said States.

The home ministry sources said that in addition to Hindi and English, the official languages of the states should be given equal prominence. It even said that the font sizes of the texts of all the languages will be of the same size.

The official notification said that the boards, sign-boards, name-plates and directional signs will be written, printed, painted, inscribed, embossed in Hindi first. The order of the other languages, including English, will be determined by the department concerned or the state concerned.

It has been observed that despite getting official status in several states, Urdu has not been given due prominence in sign boards and other official purpose.
