cabinetThe Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, AFSPA has been removed completely from Meghalaya. A Home Ministry official said, the AFSPA act, which empowers security forces to conduct operations and arrest anyone anywhere without prior notice, has been removed from all areas of Meghalaya from 31st of last month.

The decision has been taken due to a significant improvement of security situation in the state.

The official said, in Arunachal Pradesh, the AFSPA has been reduced from 16 police stations areas bordering Assam to eight police stations besides Tirap, Changlang and Longding districts.

There have been demands from various organisations in the north-east and Jammu and Kashmir for the withdrawal of the act.
