The Centré today announced name of the 98 cities which will be turned into smart city. Announcing the names, Union urban development minister M Venkaiah Naidu said, 13 cities from Uttar Pradesh,12 from Tamil Nadu,10 from Maharashtra, 7 from MP, 3 each from Bihar and Andhra Pradesh included in smart cities. He said, smart cities need smart people.
He urged for people’s co-operation to move forward in this mission.
The minister said, prime motive is to enhance urban life, mission is very practical and realistic.
Mr Naidu said state and union territories and urban local bodies have an important role to play in the implementation of Smart City Mission.
The minister said 13 crore population across 98 cities which is 35% of urban population will be covered under this smart city mission.
He said central government proposes to give financial support to Mission to the extent of Rs. 48,000 crores over next five years.
Smart Cities Mission of the Government is a bold, new initiative. It is meant to set examples that can be replicated both within and outside the Smart City, catalysing the creation of similar Smart Cities in various regions and parts of the country.
The core infrastructure elements in a smart city would include:
i. adequate water supply,
ii. assured electricity supply,
iii. sanitation, including solid waste management,
iv. efficient urban mobility and public transport,
v. affordable housing, especially for the poor,
vi. robust IT connectivity and digitalization,
vii. good governance, especially e-Governance and citizen participation,
viii. sustainable environment,
ix. safety and security of citizens, particularly women, children and the elderly,
and
x. health and education.
As far as Smart Solutions are concerned, an illustrative list is given below. This is not, however, an exhaustive list, and cities are free to add more applications.
