SCIn a landmark verdict, the Supreme Court has directed the Centre and all State governments to put police stations and interrogation rooms, jails under surveillance of CCTV cameras to prevent custodial torture.

The Verdict may go a long way in curbing custodial tortures.

n apex court bench also directed that the governments to appoint at least two female constables in all police stations. The bench also expressed concern that Delhi, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Tripura and Nagaland have so far not set up State Human Rights Commission and directed them to form the panel as soon as possible.

The apex court issued the directions on a PIL by D K Basu on prison reforms and unfilled vacancies at state human rights commissions.
