The opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is considering forming a broader political alliance ahead of the upcoming national election to “uphold the spirit of national unity,” senior leader Salahuddin Ahmed said on Monday.
“We are thinking of forming a broader alliance with the parties we joined in simultaneous movements and with others so that together we can overcome the electoral hurdle,” said Ahmed, a BNP Standing Committee member.
Speaking after paying homage to party founder Ziaur Rahman (Bir Uttam) on Jubo Dal’s 47th founding anniversary, he said BNP was holding meetings with multiple aspirants in each constituency to maintain unity within the party and the nation.
“National unity is BNP’s greatest strength. Our goal is to stay united and move forward together,” he said, adding that the party aims to reflect the aspirations of the country’s youth in its future vision.
Thousands of Jubo Dal activists gathered at Zia’s grave and offered prayers for his soul and the nation’s wellbeing.
Jamaat seeks Yunus’ assurance on ‘fair polls’: Jamaat-e-Islami has urged Bangladesh Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus to publicly declare that the upcoming 13th parliamentary election will be annulled if found to be unfair.
Party’s joint chief Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher revealed this at a roundtable titled “Inclusive and Fair National Election: Citizens’ Expectations from Political Parties” on Monday.
The event, jointly organised by ActionAid Bangladesh and Prothom Alo, was attended by leaders from several parties, including BNP’s Salahuddin Ahmed.
