In the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the ruling party Shiv Sena is leading registering victory at 77 seats out of total 227, with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at second position winning 69 seats.
Out of the 199 seats for which results have been declared till now, Congress is at third position winning 27 seats, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) 8 seats, Samajwadi Party 6 seats and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) 4 seats.
In Thane Municipal Corporation, Shiv Sena has won 43 while BJP has won 17 seats out of 131. MIM opened its account in Thane by winning 2 seats. In Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation, BJP is leading on 27 seats while the Shiv Sena leading on 17 seats out of total 78 seats.
Except Mumbai and Thane, BJP is leading at all remaining municipal corporations-namely Nagpur, Nashik, Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad, Amravati, Akola and Solapur.
Counting of votes for ten municipal corporations including the cash rich BMC, 25 zilla parishads and 283 panchayat samitis is currently underway.
While prominent BJP leader Kirit Sommaiyya’s son Neil has registered a win from Mulund; relatives of many BJP leaders have faced defeat in the polls this time around. While Vinod Shelar, brother of the party’s Mumbai unit chief Ashish Shelar, lost in ward 51 to Shiv Sena’s Swapnil Tembwalkar, Ritu Tawde, wife of state education minister Vinod Tawde lost from ward 127 to Shiv Sena’s Suresh Patil.
Even though Shiv Sena has improved its tally, the party has lost on some key seats. Standing Committee Chairman Yahodhar Phanse, Standing Committee member Trishna Vishwasrao have faced defeat.
