Karunanidhi on Monday alleged that the BJP was attempting to revive the Ram Janmabhoomi issue and taking a position against Tamil Nadu on the Cauvery water dispute only to garner electoral support in Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka in the next Assembly elections.

DMK chief urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to focus on finding solutions for issues benefiting the people.

He claimed that there were reports suggesting that the BJP was trying to revive the Ram Janmabhoomi issue to garner support during the elections in Uttar Pradesh, which are due next year.

In a statement, the DMK chief alleged that BJP government in the Centre had opposed the constitution of the Cauvery Management Board in the Supreme Court only with an eye on gaining political mileage in Karnataka.

According to him, the BJP was desperate to win the next elections and was acting against democracy and the Constitution.

Meanwhile BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit has reacted sharply over DMK chief accusing the party of trying to rake up the Ramjanma Bhoomi issue in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh for electoral gains, saying there was no need for it to do “such politics” as it already stood a chance in the northern state.

State BJP president Tamilisai Sounderrajan also slammed Karunanidhi on the Cauvery issue, over which he had once again targeted the party.

“There is no need for BJP to do such politics when opinion polls are saying the party stands a chance to come to power (in the 2017 UP polls),” she said.
