A war of Privilege Motions broke out in Parliament between treasury and opposition benches today. BJP gave Privilege notice against Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia for his comments against Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya while Congress and other opposition parties gave such notices against Human Resources Development Minister Smriti Irani.
BJP members are accusing Mr. Scindia of implicating Bandaru Dattatreya in Hyderabad University student Rohit Vemula’s suicide case. BJP’s Chief Whip Arjun Ram Meghwal claims that the Congress MP wrongly alleged that Mr. Dattatreya had called Vemula as anti-national, casteist and extremist. On the other hand, Congress and other opposition parties are cornering Smriti Irani for allegedly misleading both the Houses over the suicide by the student.
In the Lok Sabha, just after the Question Hour, BJP’s Arjun Ram Meghwal said he and many other members, had given a notice against Mr Scindia. Infuriated over this, Congress members rushed to the well, demanding that Speaker should decide on their notice against Smriti Irani. Ms Sumitra Mahajan told the agitating members that all the notices are under her consideration. In the Rajya Sabha, Congress, Left, BSP and JD(U) also gave such notices against the HRD Minister. In the pre lunch session in the House, the issue was raised by the Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad to which Deputy Chairman said the notices are under consideration of the Chairperson.
