Bangladesh will send another formal request to India seeking the extradition of deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who was handed the death penalty on Monday for crimes against humanity committed during the July–August 2024 mass uprising.
Interim government law adviser Asif Nazrul, speaking minutes after the verdict at the Secretariat, confirmed the move and criticised New Delhi’s continued sheltering of Hasina. “We will write to India again to have Sheikh Hasina extradited to Bangladesh. If India continues to give shelter to this mass murderer, then India must understand that it is engaging in hostility and a reprehensible act against Bangladesh and its people,” he said.
Nazrul added that he was “satisfied but not surprised” by the tribunal’s decision.
Dhaka’s International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Monday sentenced Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death by hanging for crimes against humanity during last year’s uprising that left more than 1,000 people dead.
Former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who testified as a prosecution witness, received a five-year prison term.
Calling the verdict historic, Nazrul said, “Today, the greatest act of establishing justice has taken place on the soil of Bangladesh.”
Home Affairs Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said the country remained calm after the verdict, with the public “largely unperturbed.” He reported only minor incidents, noting that those trying to detonate crude bombs were swiftly detained. He confirmed another extradition request will be sent to India and cautioned against “provocative remarks from neighbouring countries.”
Opposition BNP leaders welcomed the ruling. Salahuddin Ahmed called it a milestone, though “not sufficient considering the gravity of the crimes,” while BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam described it as “the burial of all forms of dictatorship,” saying the verdict proved even the most powerful eventually face justice.
The tribunal also ordered the confiscation of the properties of Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Kamal in favour of the state.
