Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has called for collective international action on climate change and the Rohingya crisis, outlining five urgent measures in each area during his engagements at the United Nations Headquarters.

Addressing a high-level meeting on “Climate Action and the Just Transition”, PM Rahman called for reducing greenhouse gas emissions to keep the 1.5-degree Celsius warming limit under the Paris Agreement, ensuring predictable climate finance for vulnerable countries, expanding access to climate-smart technologies, scaling up renewable energy and fully implementing the Loss and Damage Fund.

Highlighting Bangladesh’s climate vulnerability, he said the country contributes less than 0.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions but faces significant climate risks.

At a separate high-level side event on the Rohingya crisis, co-convened by Bangladesh and The Gambia, PM Rahman proposed measures including a clear roadmap for safe, voluntary and dignified repatriation of Rohingyas to Myanmar, an end to violence, humanitarian support, stronger accountability and enhanced regional cooperation against transnational crimes.

He said more than 1.2 million Rohingyas are sheltered in Bangladesh and stressed that the crisis originated in Myanmar and its solution lies in Myanmar.
