Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Wednesday said those responsible for killings during the student-led July 2024 mass uprising, described by its participants as an anti-fascist movement, which led to the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government, would face transparent, impartial and credible trials under due process of law.

“The killers in the anti-fascist movement will be tried in a transparent, impartial and credible manner following due process. Justice for every crime is essential to ensure the rule of law,” Tarique said.

He was addressing a discussion titled ‘July-26’ after inaugurating the July Mass Uprising Memorial Museum at Ganabhaban in Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.

Tarique said the government had decided to name institutions in local areas after people killed, forcibly disappeared or subjected to violence during the past 17 years and the July uprising.

“The government has decided to name an institution in the respective locality after every person who embraced martyrdom or became a victim of enforced disappearance and killing,” he said.

Referring to the museum, Tarique said it should not promote the exclusive political narrative of any individual, group or party.

“The 2024 mass uprising did not belong to any individual, group or political party. Its true heroes are the democratic people of Bangladesh,” he said.

Tarique compared the uprising with the country’s 1971 Liberation War, saying the war secured Bangladesh’s independence, while the 2024 movement sought to protect the state’s independence and the freedom of its people.

“Just as people have never forgotten the freedom fighters of 1971, they will never forget those who laid down their lives in 2024,” he added.

A day earlier, Nobel laureate and former chief adviser of the immediate past interim government, Muhammad Yunus, paid tribute to those killed during the uprising.

“July stands as a defining chapter in the struggle for people’s rights, justice and democratic aspirations. In our collective memory, July is a long month, 36 days long,” Yunus said in a statement issued on the eve of July Mass Uprising Day.

He said the movement reflected the nation’s “extraordinary unity and strength” against injustice and expressed his deepest respect for the martyrs.

“I also express my profound gratitude to those who were injured, lost their eyesight or were left permanently disabled in the struggle,” Yunus said.
