Bangladesh interim government advisory council has approved a draft ordinance granting legal immunity to participants of the July 2024 mass uprising, shielding them from criminal liability for actions taken during the movement. The July Mass Uprising Protection and Accountability Ordinance was approved at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus in Dhaka on Thursday.
Law Adviser Asif Nazrul told a press conference that the move fulfilled a prior commitment made to uprising participants. “It was our commitment to the July Uprising participants. The ordinance has been approved today,” he said, adding that it would be gazetted within five to seven days.
Nazrul said the ordinance grants immunity for activities organised as part of “political resistance” aimed at restoring democracy through the fall of what he described as a “fascist” government. “For all such activities, the July Uprising activists have been granted exemption from criminal liability. This applies to activities organised during July and August,” he said.
