Bangladesh’s Advisory Council on Tuesday approved the referendum ordinance, paving the way for holding the 13th parliamentary election.
The decision came at a meeting chaired by the interim chief adviser Muhammad Yunus. The approval follows the council’s earlier endorsement of the Referendum Act on November 20.
The referendum seeks to gauge public opinion on reform proposals submitted by the National Consensus Commission. The government had earlier indicated that a legal instrument would be finalised within days, prompting Tuesday’s special session to give the final approval.
Verdict in graft case against ex-PM Sheikh Hasina, family on December 1
A Dhaka court has fixed December 1 for delivering the verdict in a graft case against former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana, and niece Tulip Siddique, over alleged irregularities in the allocation of a 10-katha RAJUK Purbachal New Town land project.
Judge Rabiul Alam of the Dhaka Special Judge Court-4 set the date on Tuesday (November 25) after completing arguments in the case. On November 23, the court heard submissions from defence counsel Khurshid Alam, who pleaded not guilty. The remaining 16 accused, all absconding, are being tried in absentia.
Earlier, on November 18, the court concluded the testimony phase after the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) assistant director Afnan Jannat Keya, the investigation officer, finished her deposition.
