In a letter written to these leaders, the AMU Teachers’ Association said that the process of the selection of new Vice Chancellor cannot take place as long as the current VC is serving in the campus.
AMU Teachers’ Association has written a letter President of India, the Minister of HRD, Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Samajwadi party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav, Left leaders like Prakash Karat, A.B. Bardhan, and other political leaders regarding the ongoing CBI enquiry against Vice Chancellor Prof. Abdul Azis.
The Association and its Action Committee in its meeting appreciated the orders of the Visitor putting restrain on Prof. Azis’s role as Vice-Chancellor, in the matter of appointments, promotions and policy decisions.
The HRD ministry in a communication to the University last month had restrained the Vice Chancellor from taking any important decision since he is facing CBI enquiry in misappropriation of university funds. Prof Azis was earlier indicted by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report.
AMU teachers alleged that for the last one week Prof Azis has been misusing his position as Vice-Chancellor to coerce and instigate sentiments against the government orders. Prof Azis has been telling people that even routine temporary appointments are banned and therefore teaching learning shall suffer acutely, no funds from any funding agency would be received and those received cannot be used. Members of his administration viz the Registrar, Finance Officer, Controller of Examinations, some teachers holding pleasure appointments like Proctor, Provosts, Directors of Centres, Members-in-Charge, O.S.D., etc. have been going around ordering their sub-ordinates to garner support against this scary scenario and instructing them to participate in a protest programme sponsored by the University administration.
“The teachers body alleged that on August 23, 2011, the university administration organized a Dharna against the Visitor’s orders. Some persons from outside the University as well as many ex-students whose credentials are doubtful were also present to lend muscle to the demonstration,” AMUTA press release says.
AMUTA said that a memorandum on behalf of a section of teachers has been submitted to the government opposing the enquiry against the VC. Teahers body believes that the memorandum contains names of two deceased employees. This suggests that the list of signatories was inflated by collecting signatures made on earlier occasions and on other issues.
AMUTA insisted that Prof Aziz has previously tried to get the Academic Council meeting on July 30, 2011 to pass a resolution against the CBI enquiry, and now he is using other means such as Dharna, strike call by his administrative staff.
The AMU Teachers’ Association, has requested all well-wishers to intervene and help us to get the Govt. of India to remove Prof. Azis from AMU immediately, or our fear for manipulation of the enquiry process will become a reality. “We further appeal that the process of selection of the new Vice-Chancellor should be stopped immediately and should not be restarted as long as Prof. Azis is in Aligarh or continues as Vice-Chancellor,” says the AMUTA press release.
