The Aligarh Muslim University, AMU has requested a CBI probe into the recent violence in the campus in which two persons were killed and several properties were destroyed.
Vice Chancellor Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah, in a letter to the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mr. Akhilesh Yadav, requested for recommending a CBI enquiry or probe by Special Task Force (STF) in the violence that occurred in the night of 23rd April, 2016. In his letter, the AMU Vice Chancellor has mentioned the details of violence.
The District Magistrate of Aligarh, Dr. Balkar Singh has already ordered a time bound Magisterial Enquiry into the incidents. The situation on the university campus is normal with classes and other offices functioning as per routine.
Earlier, in the meeting with Deans of Faculties and local members of the Executive Council, the Vice Chancellor had announced an enquiry by a high power external agency primarily because he was convinced that to do justice, University had to unravel the roots of this unfortunate incident of violence.
AMU Vice Chancellor further said that during the summer vacation, each and every room in all hostels will be vacated by June 15, except medical students. The University has also decided that no person will be allowed to enter in the premises of the Administrative Block without valid proof of identity, while, at the same time, visitors will be required to take prior appointment. Similarly, students who have any problem shall be allowed to visit authorities on prior appointment, between 3 to 5 pm on all working days, except Friday.
The University has made it clear that identity will be checked by Sentries at entry gates and all visitors must show their identity cards or a valid identity proof when asked by the security personnel. All four and two wheelers must have a valid sticker issued by the Proctor’s office.
Meanwhile, surprise check was carried out at the S.S. Hall (South), S.S. Hall (North), V.M. Hall and Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Hall annexe by the AMU authorities with the help of local police and RAF personnel. The purpose was to identify illegal residents and detect illegal weapons. The presence of University officials and police personnel reassured the students that serious efforts were being made to enforce law and order.
Statement made to the press by the former Vice Chancellor Mr. Mahmoodur Rahman is regrettable. He should reflect on his own tenure as AMU Vice Chancellor and not allow pique to prejudice his views for the sole reason that his cherished ambition was not fulfilled by the AMU community.
