AMU organizes Yoga Workshop

The Aligarh Muslim University, AMU today organized a Symposium and Workshop on “Wellbeing through Yoga” as part of the grand celebration of World Yoga Day.

Addressing the Yoga camp organized under the aegis of Department of Physical Health and Sports Education, the Vice Chancellor, Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah said that Yoga was an indispensable part of India’s cultural heritage and he was proud of the great ethos which has been practiced in AMU for over the last fifty years.

Lt. Gen. Shah said that he has been practicing Yoga for over forty years and he learnt this ancient art from a Yogi. He said that it is an art for physical fitness and mental healing. He said that Yoga brings discipline in the life of performers.

Appreciating the role played by the Department of Physical Education in organizing this programme, Gen Shah also praised faculty members and students of the University for their zealous participation in the grand yoga performance.

Expressing his views on the occasion, Prof. N.A.K. Durrani, Dean, Faculty of Social Science said that owing to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts, Yoga has gained international recognition and currency, and it is being practiced now in several countries. He said that 21st June is the longest day of the year and the Yoga Day makes the most relevant use of this day at international level.

Welcoming the guests, Prof. Brij Bhushan, Chairman, Department of Physical Health and Sports Education said that a number of programmes have been organized to enhance awareness about Yoga. These programmes included Yoga competition, essay writing competition, weeklong workshop, poster presentation and screening of yoga related documentary films. Prof. Zamirullah Khan presented a brief report of the Yoga related activities carried out by the department. Dr. Rajendra Singh conducted the Yoga workouts.

A number of Yoga asanas, prescribed by the Ministry of Ayush. The programme began with the recitation from the Holy Quran and concluded with the national Anthem.

On this occasion, winners of essay writing competition in English, Hindi and Urdu were felicitated by the Vice Chancellor, Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah.

Dr. Arshad Bari proposed a vote of thanks. On this occasion, Mrs. Sabiha Simi Shah was also present. The Program was conducted by Dr Merajuddin Fareedi.
