Senior Supreme Court advocate Barrister Raghib Rauf Chowdhury has been appointed as the new Attorney General of Bangladesh, law ministry sources said on Monday.
Chowdhury completed his schooling at Kushtia Zilla School and Notre Dame College, Dhaka, before graduating in political science from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), India. He later pursued a master’s degree at the University of Dhaka and studied law in the United Kingdom, obtaining his Bar-at-Law from the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn in London. He is the son of Abdur Rauf Chowdhury, a Language Movement activist and Freedom Fighter.
In a related development, Advocate Md Aminul Islam has been appointed chief prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), replacing Mohammad Tajul Islam. A gazette notification issued by the Law and Justice Division confirmed that Aminul Islam will hold the rank, salary and benefits equivalent to that of the Attorney General until further orders. Tajul Islam had been appointed on September 5, 2024, during the interim government’s tenure. The BNP-led government, formed after the 13th parliamentary elections, has now revoked that appointment.
