At least ten people are feared dead and five injured in a massive landslide triggered by incessant rain at Bhalukpong in West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh, yesterday. According to official sources, five bodies have been recovered by the rescue team, while another five persons are still missing.
Rescue operation is going on in full swing at the landslide area in Bhalukphung with the help of Army, ITBP jawans, local police and government officials. It is suspected that out of the five missing persons, presumed dead, two are adults while three are minors. The powerful landslide swept away four houses and damaged nine other buildings.
Governor JP Rajkhowa has announced an ex-gratia relief of Rs. 1 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased in the landslide. Chief Minister Kalikho Pul has instructed the district administration to use a fund of Rs 30 lakhs at their disposal to meet the financial needs for carrying out relief and restoration works in the area. Arunachal Pradesh is experiencing torrential rainfall since last week.
