Sarbanand Sonowal today sworn in as the first BJP Chief Minister of Assam. Governor P.B. Acharya administered the oath of office to Mr. Sonowal and 10 of his ministerial colleagues at a grand ceremony in Guwahati.
The BJP has formed its first government in North-east. Those who took the oath included Hemanta Biswas Sarma.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his senior cabinet colleagues and 14 Chief Ministers of NDA ruled states besides BJP President Amit Shah were present on the occasion.
A former fire brand student leader Sonowal had led an alliance of BJP and two regional partners Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People’s Front to end a 15-year long Congress rule in the state.
The ceremony, was attended by BJP president Amit Shah, was held at the sprawling Khanapara rally ground in the city that was turned saffron with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) flags fluttering all over.
Also present at the event were the chief ministers of the BJP-ruled states and leaders of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Former chief minister Tarun Gogoi, who ruled the state for 15 years before Sonowal dethroned him, also attended the ceremony.
