The Supreme Court has termed the state of medical colleges in the country as “rotten”, and imposed Rs 5 crore fine on an Odisha-based private medical college for raising the number of seats.
A two- Judge apex court bench yesterday said during an hearing, that the Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) in Bhuvaneshwar has played with the future of its students by raising MBBS seats from 100 to 150 in an academic year.
The bench, however, protected the college students who were admitted last year. The top court also restrained KIMS from increasing the intake of students from 100 to 150 this year onwards.
The order came on an appeal filed by Medical Council of India (MCI) challenging the Odisha High Court’s verdict which had permitted KIMS to admit the additional 50 students.
