A special CBI court today awarded life imprisonment to 47 police officials found guilty of killing 10 Sikhs in a fake encounter case that happened in 1991 in Pilibhit district in Uttar Pradesh. Though only ten dead bodies were recovered and one is considered still missing.

The CBI court also imposed fine on police officials. The CBI had investigated the case on the directions of Supreme Court. The special CBI court found these police officials guilty on Friday last. 10 other accused police officials died during the trial.

According to the CBI prosecutor, the incident took place on July 12, 1991. A group of Sikh pilgrims was returning by bus after visiting Nanakmatha, Patna Sahib, Huzur Sahib and other holy places.

The police intercepted the bus near a bridge at Kachhalaghat in Pilibhit and eleven Sikhs were forced to step down the bus. Later, they were killed in encounter shown in different police stations.
