The Supreme Court has made it clear that it would confine itself to the violence in Patiala House court complex on February 15th and 17th in which JNU students, teachers and journalists were attacked during hearing of sedition case against JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar.
A bench comprising Justices J Chelameswar and A M Sapre said yesterday, they are only concerned with the episode that had happened on February 15th and 17th. The response of the court came when the Karkardooma District bar body referred to the cultural programme at JNU campus alleging that anti-national slogans were raised there and the execution of Parliament Attack case convict Afzal Guru was termed as judicial killing.
The bench also said it was not concerned with subsequent events and will not broaden the scope of hearing. During the hearing, the bench perused reports filed by Delhi Police, Bar Council of India, Delhi High Court Registry and the six-member lawyers’ panel formed by the apex court. It also directed all concerned parties to share the reports among themselves regarding the violence at the Patiala House Court premises before the next hearing on March 10th.
Meanwhile, Kanhaiya’s bail plea will be heard by Delhi High Court today. He had approached the high court after the Supreme Court on Friday refused to hear his bail petition on the ground that it will set a dangerous precedent and had asked him to approach the high court. Five JNU students, who the police have been looking for in connection with a sedition case, surfaced on the University’s campus on Sunday night. The students maintained that they will not surrender but police can come and arrest them. They also said, they did not do anything wrong but were framed using a doctored video.
They had gone missing from the campus since 12th of this month after Kanhaiya was arrested in a sedition case.
