SCThe Supreme Court today rejected a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking Leader of Opposition (LoP) status for the Congress in Lok Sabha. While refusing to entertain the plea, the apex court noted that the aggrieved party was not in court and if they want the status of LoP then they should approach the court on their own.

The Lok Sabha has no LoP as the Congress with 44 seats fell short of the minimum strength of 55 required to stake claim for the post.

In 2014, Congress had approached Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan over the same. After taking the opinion of Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi she rejected the plea. Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge is currently the leader of Congress Parliamentary party.
