The CBI has sought permission to prosecute former chief minister of Maharashtra, Ashok Chavan for his alleged role in the illegally-built Adarsh Apartments. CBI had appealed Governor Vidyasagar Rao to seek his permission to initiate criminal proceedings against Mr. Chavan.

Ashok Chavan was Chief Minister when the scam was revealed in 2010. He was forced to step down after it emerged that three of his relatives had been given apartments in the 31-storey building. In 2013, the then Governor K Sankaranarayan had refused to let Mr Chavan be prosecuted due to lack of sufficient evidence.
