India and Russia today signed 16 agreements across sectors including in the field of railways and hydrocarbon. The agreements were signed after the delegation level talks between the two countries.
Addressing the media after the signing of agreements, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India sees Russia as a significant partner in its economic transformation and in shaping a balanced and multi-polar world in future.
He said, agreement on manufacture of Kamov 226 helicopter in India is the first project for a major defence platform under Make In India Mission. He said, India has great respect and appreciation for the two countries’ strategic partnership as it has been a source of strength and success for New Delhi.
On the occasion, Russian President Vladimir Putin said, India is a great power carrying out a balanced and responsible foreign policy.
After extensive talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the need for the world to unite against terrorism without distinction and discrimination between terrorist groups.
Mr Putin also conveyed Russia’s strong support to India’s bid for permanent membership of the UN Security Council, saying it is a deserving and strong candidate that can bring an independent and responsible approach within the world body.
Mr Putin said, Unit-II of Kudankulam atomic plant in Tamil Nadu, being built by Russia, will be commissioned within weeks and negotiations are at an advanced staged for Unit III and IV.
In the atomic field, the two sides signed a significant agreement for Localization of Manufacturing in India for Russian-Designed Nuclear Reactor Units to enable participation of Indian firms under the ‘Make-in-India’ programme. The cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy is a cornerstone of the Russia-India strategic partnership.
Though Prime Minister Modi and President Putin discussed a number of issues but cooperation in the field of defence, security , energy and ways to enhance trade and investment topped the agenda. Travel will be easier between the two countries. While addressing the friends of India, Mr Modi said Russia has always stood by India as a friend.
He also stressed on the need to boost number of Russian tourists to India. Saying the ties between the two countries goes beyond trade and commerce, Prime minister said though his visit to Russia was short but very successful. As Russian love India, they need to see India, was Prime Minister’s parting shot before he left Russia.
