Most parts of Chennai and its suburbs are receiving heavy rains from morning renewing concerns of fresh floods. The MeT Department has attributed the fresh downpour to a new Low Pressure Area formed in the South West Bay of Bengal that has the potential to bring heavy rain for the next two days in many coastal districts and Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh.
Banks are kept open in Chennai today for the people to avail banking services as most of the ATMs have downed their shutters, reportedly due to failure to replenish currency and poor telecom network connectivity.
The State Bank of India has introduced manual banking services using vans in the flood affected areas to help customers.
Torrential downpour is also being witnessed in many parts of Cuddalore, Nagapattinam and Tiruvannamalai, Tiruvarur, districts. The state and central rescue and relief teams are on the field in low lying areas of Chennai continuously.
A very limited commercial air operation was made from Chennai Airport today which remained shut down since Wednesday. Airport sources say, full-fledged traffic would take more time and night operation is not possible in the present circumstances.
Rail services from Chennai Central and Egmore terminals have resumed though many trains have been cancelled today, as the arrival of their pair trains are delayed.
