ULFA founder General Secretary Anup Chetia who was brought to Guwahati on Wednesday morning was remanded to 5 day CBI custody in connection with the killing of Congress leader in Golaghat on August 29, 1986.
The ULFA leader who was in transit remand of the Central Bureau of Investigation arrived at the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International airport in a special BSF aircraft. Adding to this, close confidante of Chetia- Lakhi Goswami and Babul Goswami jailed in Bangladesh was also brought to Guwahati. This was disclosed by a top source of the ULFA pro-talk faction.
The ULFA leader was straight away taken to the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court as CBI’s transit remand of Chetia ended today. Chetia was produced before the special chief judicial magistrate court of Sangita Haloi amidst tight security. Top leaders of the pro-talk faction of ULFA were also present in the court premises.
It may be mentioned here, that the apex investigating agency registered a case on March 21, 1988 against Chetia at the request of the Assam government in connection with an alleged killing of Congress leader Debojit Dhar Choudhury on August 29, 1986 in Golaghat in Assam. The court after hearing remanded Chetia to 5 day CBI custody in connection with the case and was flown back to the national capital by sleuths of the CBI. Chetia will be produced again before the CJM court on November 23.
Chetia, who was in Bangladesh since his arrest by the country’s police in 1997, was handed over to India on 11th of this month, following which he was arrested by CBI in Delhi.
Anup Chetia, whose real name is Golap Baruah, is the founding member of ULFA and its general secretary. Chetia wanted for murder, abductions and extortion is among the most wanted criminals of Assam.
